The Best in the Desert Henderson 250 was the final race in 2013 for the Banning Motorsports team. The 2013 race season had its share of ups and downs but the positives far outweighed the negatives at year’s end. “We had a very blessed 2013 race season,” says Lee Banning Sr., “The 1178 won 4 races and a second 1100 class championship; a sweet year. Thanks go to Bryan, Rick, Marley and Bradley for a super job. The 1023 car had a crazy year with several issues. We battled the whole way; it was a great effort by the whole team on this one. We took fifth place at the BAJA 1000, third place at Henderson and a fifth place in the BITD championship.”
It seemed as though they had the 2nd championship in a row in their pockets for the 1178 car. They only had to start the race in order to win the title. That is about all they got done; early in the race they hit a rock that knocked the oil sending unit off and lost oil pressure thus ending their day. “We were very disappointed but we were otherwise blessed this year”, says Lee. The 1023 started in the third race of the day in the front pack of class 10 cars. “We had a great race for the first lap,” said Lee, We ran a smooth clean lap despite fighting the snow and cold running 4th or 5th on the road. We moved up to 3rd by the end of the 2nd lap. Gary Williams got in for the last lap and had a good run. It was a trouble free day with no flats and no problems all day. The result was 3rd place in the race and a top 5 for the year.
“We feel very blessed for the success we have had this past year and want to thank our team, sponsors, and their families,” said Lee, “This is truly a team sport and we depend on everyone involved for our success. Thanks for all your support in the past and for the future. We will be running a full schedule in 2014 and hope to be out front with all your help.” The Banning Motorsports team thrives on competition. In 2014, they will be competing in both the entire Best in the Desert series and selectSCORE International races in Mexico including the Baja 500 and Baja 1000.
